About three years ago we added an extension off the back of our house greatly increasing the size of our small kitchen to a size more suitable for our family of eight. I was so focused on appliances and colors and furniture, that I really didn't give much thought to the window. I trusted the architect's recommendation. Was that ever the right thing to do! I never planned that the window was going to be the centerpiece of the room... we invested in a cadillac of an oven and a Vermont Castings woodstove which heats the house, so I expected those things to grab people's attention. As you can see the arched window beautifully frames the flowering tree in the backyard. Right now it is just about in full bloom and a favorite place for local wildlife (mostly sparrows and squirrels) In summer it is a lush green full of large leaves. Autumn finds it colored in bright yellows and oranges making the window an everchanging work of art. I love waking up early and taking a peek outside to check the weather and see if there are any visitors to the feeders out back. We even attached one to the window to attract birds close-up and this morning had our first cardinal discover it is there! Very exciting for the little ones.
For the first year I did not have anything on the window. The only dressing for this type of window I saw was a blind for the top part of the arch which fanned around. I could just imagine getting too lazy to climb up there every day to open it. My husband and I both wanted to take advantage of the light and view afforded us by this large window. But it definitely needed some "dressing up". I saw the valance in a catalog called Tender Heart Treasures and the blue matched perfectly. In the catalog it was shown hanging under a shelf, but my husband was concerned a shelf would block the light. I have a dear friend who is an excellent problem solver and without batting an eye she said "Why don't you just get a glass shelf?" A perfect compromising solution! We change the decor on the shelf with the seasons, along with the greens that line the top of our cabinets. I feel like the kitchen always looks festive.
I try to keep some spiritual reminders near the kitchen window since I spend so much of my day there at the sink... a small figurine of St. Anne and the Blessed Mother, a prayer card from Pope Benedict's recent visit, a small mosaic cross made by one of the children for an art project this year. These things bring me back to prayer during the mundane times of my day when I am doing dishes, cooking and cleaning. They help me keep a heart of gratitude for all my blessings!
